SHARJAH: The Dubai Court of Appeal has ordered a compensation of 1.4 million dirhams (equivalent to 3.36 crore Indian Rupees) for Hamsa Puthiya Veettil Hassan, a native of Peringome, Kannur, who was seriously injured in a car accident in Umm Al Quwain.

On January 29, 2024, Hamsa was crossing the road near the Horse Roundabout in Umm Al Quwain's Al Salamah area when he was hit by a motorbike driven by a Pakistani national. Hamsa sustained a severe head injury and went into a coma. He lost the ability to breathe normally, requiring a tracheostomy, and a gastrostomy tube was inserted for feeding. He also suffered from bone weakness and loss of bladder control.

The Pakistani national responsible for the accident was fined 3,000 dirhams in a criminal case. However, considering Hamsa's future medical and living expenses, his relatives approached Yab Legal Services CEO Salam Pappinissery to file a compensation claim. Since Hamsa was in a coma, his wife provided the power of attorney to the lawyer.

Initially, the Court of First Instance awarded 350,000 dirhams in compensation. However, recognizing the severity of the injuries, the lawyers at Yab Legal Services appealed to a higher court. They presented detailed medical reports and strong legal arguments, which led the appellate court to increase the compensation amount to 1.4 million dirhams. This significant sum will provide immense relief to Hamsa and his family for his medical treatment and future care.
