Dubai Court Awards AED 100,000 Compensation to Pakistani National Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident

DUBAI: The Dubai Court has ordered an insurance company to pay AED 100,000 (approximately 76 Lakh Pakistani Rupees) in compensation to Waheed Ahmed Abdul Aziz, a Pakistani national who sustained severe injuries in a complex road accident in the Al Muteena area. The incident, which occurred on June 30, 2024, involved a Nepali hotel employee who, despite having no driving license and lacking the vehicle owner’s permission, attempted to move an Indian national’s car from behind a hotel and struck Waheed. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, but was later apprehended and fined AED 7,000 by the Criminal Court for driving without a license, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and a hit-and-run. Although the police report (FIR) noted shared liability, as Waheed was positioned unsafely on the road at the time of the impact—leading to a AED 1,000 fine for the victim—the civil court recognized the life-altering nature of his injuries.

Waheed suffered grave trauma to his chest, spine, face, and abdomen, resulting in permanent disabilities that necessitated a robust legal intervention. His relatives sought the expertise of YAB Legal Services, where a legal team led by CEO Salam Pappinissery filed a civil lawsuit supported by forensic medical evidence. The court took a stern view of the driver’s negligence and the fact that he fled the scene, ultimately ruling that the insurance company must provide substantial financial redress. In addition to the AED 100,000 principal compensation, the court ordered the insurer to pay AED 4,100 for medical expenses, AED 500 for legal fees, and an annual interest of 5% on the total amount from the date of the verdict until the final settlement is realized, ensuring the victim receives necessary support for his long-term recovery.
