Sharjah: Global Pravasi Association Chairman Salam Pappinissery has submitted a memorandum to Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia demanding an end to the extortionate fares for expatriates. Reports indicate that the fare from Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai to Karipur, which was Rs 8,000, is now being charged up to Rs 40,000. This means that the ticket price has increased by three to five times. The protest from the expatriate community is that this is a rip-off targeting those who are coming home for a small festival.

Apart from the UAE, air fares have also been sharply increased in countries like Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Following such a move by the airlines, many expatriate families, including Malayalis, have canceled their trips. The Global Pravasi Association pointed out in the memorandum that expatriates are facing heartbreaking experiences even though they are known as the backbone of the country. Salam Pappinissery also explained that he hopes that the Department of Civil Aviation will provide due justice for this issue, understanding the helplessness of expatriates.
