On May 15, 2009, in Al Qus, Dubai, a bus driven by an Egyptian national was reversing and hit Abdul Khader, who was crossing the road from behind. Abdul Khader, who suffered serious head injuries from the impact, was immediately taken to Rashid Hospital for treatment by the police, but he died due to uncontrolled bleeding. The police had filed a case with the criminal court, stating that both parties were at fault for not following the traffic rules while crossing the road and for being negligent when reversing the vehicle. The criminal court ruled that the Egyptian national should be fined 10,000 dirhams, have his license suspended for three months, and pay 1.5 million dirhams as compensation to Abdul Khader's family.

Abdul Khader's family approached Salam Pappinissery, CEO of Yab Legal Services in the UAE, for further legal assistance. Under his leadership, the insurance company approached the court seeking more compensation in addition to the compensation awarded by the criminal court. Although the insurance company asked the court to reject Abdul Khader's petition, saying that both parties were at fault, the court upheld the arguments of Abdul Khader's lawyer and ordered that an additional fifty thousand dirhams (a total of two lakh dirhams, i.e. forty-five lakh Indian rupees) be paid to Abdul Khader's family in addition to the compensation.
