Indian Expat Awarded Dh300,000 Compensation After Serious Sharjah Accident

SHARJAH: An Indian national, severely injured in a 2019 road accident caused by a drunk Emirati driver who violated traffic rules, has been awarded a substantial compensation of Dh300,000 (approximately ₹70 lakh) by a UAE court.
The court instructed the insurance company to pay the compensation amount, along with 9% interest from the date of the verdict until the full payment is made, to the injured expat, Ashok Adepu. The accident took place on the Maliha road in Sharjah on January 1, 2019.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred when the Emirati national, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, violated traffic laws and swerved from his lane, crashing into a car driven by Ashok Adepu, who was traveling in the right lane. The Emirati driver admitted guilt in the criminal case that followed.
In the criminal trial, the court had previously sentenced the Emirati driver to 80 lashes, a fine of Dh12,000, and a three-month suspension of his driving license.
Compensation Case
Ashok Adepu sustained severe injuries, including intracranial haemorrhage, lung damage (pulmonary contusion), and serious injuries to his chest and arms.
Following the criminal verdict, Adepu's relatives approached Salam Pappinissery, CEO of YAB Legal Services, for assistance in securing compensation for the injuries.
Salam Pappinissery filed a compensation case with the Insurance Authority, submitting all necessary documents, including the medical reports and the criminal court judgment. After reviewing the case, the court ordered the insurance company to pay the significant compensation amount to the injured Indian expat.
