Malayali Family Gets AED 300,000 Compensation Following Fatal Accident in Dubai

DUBAI: The family of Nikhil Prasannan Leela, a resident of Azhoor, Thiruvananthapuram, who tragically died in a car accident in Dubai on March 20, 2023, has received a total compensation of AED 300,000 (approximately ₹72 Lakh Indian Rupees), which includes Diya Money (Blood Money).
Nikhil's relatives approached Salam Pappinisseri, CEO of the prominent Dubai-based Yab Legal Services, who took up the case.
To provide legal assistance to Nikhil’s family, YAB Legal Services collected all necessary documents, including the Breadwinner Certificate and Legal Heirs Certificate, and registered a Tarikhat case. They subsequently secured the initial Diya Money from the Dubai Criminal Court.
The accident occurred on the Jebel Ali Al Habab Street in Dubai, at a location where drainage work was underway. The vehicle lost control, abruptly deviated from the track, and overturned onto the left lane of the road near the sewage treatment plant. Nikhil, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene. The Indian driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was admitted to NMC Hospital.
Following the accident, the Dubai Criminal Court convicted the driver for negligent driving, sentencing him to a fine of AED 10,000 and a three-month suspension of his license. The court also ordered the payment of AED 200,000 as Diya Money (Blood Money) to the family of the deceased Nikhil.
Considering the amount awarded by the Criminal Court to be insufficient, the family's advocate filed a civil case seeking further compensation through the Insurance Authority.
In the Civil Case, the court ordered the payment of an additional AED 100,000 in compensation, along with 5% interest calculated from the date of the judgment until the full amount is settled, and AED 500 towards the advocate's fees.
As per these judgments, the family received a total of AED 300,000, which includes the AED 200,000 Diya Money awarded by the Criminal Court and the AED 100,000 compensation awarded through the Insurance Authority.
