Sharjah Book Fair; Malabar Gold CEO Faisal releases Malayalam version of Man Booker International Prize winner Jokha Al-Hariri's novel 'Nilavinte Pennungal'

Sharjah: The Malayalam version of Jokha Al-Hariri's novel 'Nilavinte Pennungal', the winner of the 2019 Man Booker International Prize, was released by Malabar Gold Head Faisal Adv. Rashid Al Suaidi at the 39th International Book Fair that began at the Sharjah Expo Centre. Jokha Al-Hariri's novel has been translated from Arabic by prominent novelist Ibrahim Badusha Wafi. The launch ceremony was held at the pavilion of the book's publisher, Olive Publications.

The novel 'Nilavinte Pennungal' depicts various aspects of witchcraft, slave trade and the evolving stages of modern Oman. The novel tells the story of three sisters, their families and lives in the village of Al Awafi in the years following its independence from Britain in the 1950s. The novel revolves around the lives of Mayya, who marries Abdullah, Asma, who marries with a sense of responsibility, and Khaula, who has immigrated to Canada and is waiting to be reunited with the man she loves. The novel shows women who are simultaneously strong and weak, but how they are alienated in their own land.

Salim Ayyanath introduced the book at the event. Shankar Narayanan, Social Activist K.T.P. Ibrahim, Munthir Kalpakanchery, and Hamsa Kariyadan Mankadavu.
