Dubai: The Supreme Court has ordered a compensation of 2.2 million dirhams (approximately Rs. 4 crore) including court costs to a Thrissur native who was injured in a road accident.

The Supreme Court has upheld the appeal verdict of the Dubai court. Antony Kokkadan, son of Kunjuvarith, a native of Chengalur, Thrissur, will receive the compensation. The accident occurred in 2015 when he collided with a vehicle driven by an Arab on the highway in Umm al-Quwain while working as a sales representative in a trading company in Dubai. Antony, who was seriously injured, was first admitted to Umm al-Quwain Hospital and later to Dubai Rashid Hospital.

Antony's brother-in-law Varghese Kodiyan, who works as an accountant in a private company in Dubai, and company owner Varghese Antony had jointly filed the case with Salam Pappinissery, CEO of Yab Legal Services, regarding the case. The Arab man tried to get a favorable verdict in the criminal case by arguing that Antony was at fault, but the court acquitted Antony.

The case was filed in the Dubai court against the Arab man and the insurance company, seeking compensation of 30 lakh dirhams. In this case, the civil court had awarded compensation of 4 lakh dirhams. In the appeal filed against it, it was ordered to pay 22 lakh dirhams including court costs to Antony, who was involved in the car accident. The insurance company filed a case in the Supreme Court against this. This is where the Supreme Court made a crucial ruling, upholding the verdict of the Court of Appeal. The court, accepting the request made by Antony's advocate, who was undergoing treatment in his home country, sent a doctor from the UAE. The report was prepared in the presence of Dr. Surendran, Head of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Ernakulam. Salam Pappi Nissery was also present with the doctor.
