Sharjah: The Sharjah Court has ordered the family of Pakistani national Shaukat Khan, who died in an accident at work, to pay 250,000 dirhams (20 million Pakistani rupees) in compensation.

On July 28, 2020, a wooden plank fell on his body from the sixth floor while he was working in a building under construction in Sharjah. The court found that the accident was caused by the negligence of the workers working on the sixth floor and the Sharjah Criminal Court subsequently convicted the workers and their construction company who caused the accident. Shaukat, who died in the accident, was the only support of the family. Therefore, the heirs approached Salam Pappinissery, a legal representative and social activist in the UAE, to obtain compensation.

Later, a case was filed in the Sharjah Civil Court on his instructions. The case for compensation was registered against the workers who caused the accident and the construction company. The lawyer for Shaukat's heirs approached the court with strong documents such as the criminal case judgment, death certificate, and inheritance certificate.

When the case reached the court, the court examined the documents and arguments submitted by the heirs' lawyer and found that the fault lay with the opposing party's employees and the construction company they work for, that the company's security personnel should have been present at the scene of the incident, and that it was the company's responsibility to ensure all security measures, and therefore Shaukat's heirs were entitled to compensation.

Based on the documents submitted by the heirs' lawyer, the court ordered the opposing party's heirs to pay 250,000 dirhams and 5 percent legal interest until it was fully paid.
